Samuel Vargas-Amir Khan headlines September 8 in Birmingham
When it comes to big opportunities, Ontario’s Samuel Vargas may not get a bigger one than this.
On September 8, the Toronto-based Columbian will travel to Birmingham, England in search of an upset when he takes on former WBA and IBF Super Lightweight champion Amir Khan in what promises to be an interesting styles clash.
The bout has been rumoured for weeks and was made official on June 28 via Eddie Hearn’s Twitter account.
Khan is coming off one of the most impressive victories of his career, blasting out Ontario’s Phil Lo Greco in 39 seconds in Liverpool. It was Khan’s first bout since a devastating knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez in May of 2016. Prior to that, Khan had put together five straight victories.
Since a seventh-round TKO loss to Danny Garcia in November of 2016, Vargas has gone 4-0-1 with his most recent bout a majority draw against Mauro Maximiliano Godoy of Argentina on June 2.
According to BoxRec, Vargas is currently the 46th ranked welterweight fighter in the world and 10th in the WBA welterweight rankings. Khan is the ninth-ranked welterweight by the WBC and seventh-ranked welterweight by the WBA. Khan is also the seventh-ranked super welterweight according to BoxRec.
More details are expected soon for the card. Other bouts announced are a British Middleweight Title rematch between Tommy Langford and Jason Welborn, as well as a championship bout for Sam Eggington.
